AS Roma have signed Norwegian international John Alieu Carew on loan from Spanish side Valencia CF.
Medical passed
The 23-year-old striker underwent a medical on Saturday morning and agreed to move to Italy, with the details of the deal undisclosed. Carew will wear the Number23 shirt with Roma.
European experience
The tall striker spent three years with Valencia, scoring 20 goals in 83 league matches. He also made a number of significant contributions in the UEFA Champions League, helping the Spanish side reach the final in 2000 and scored against Roma in the Stadio Olimpico in the second group stage of last season's competition.
UEFA Cup campaign
Roma, together with Valencia, failed to qualify for the 2003/04 Champions League, and will now face FK Vardar of F.Y.R Macedonia in the UEFA Cup first round on 24 September and 15 October.
Samuel delight
There was more good news for Roma as Argentinian international defender Walter Samuel extended his contract until 2008. The 25-year-old joined Fabio Capello's side in 2000 and was a key figure as Roma won the Serie A title in his first season.
Loan deal
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Argentinian defender Damian Cufrè has left Roma, joining Serie A newcomers AC Siena on loan for one season.
