Araz show of heart rewarded with third place

What Araz Naxçivan lacked in energy they more than made up for in heart, said Adriano Foglia, after the hosts earned bronze in a ten-goal thriller with Kairat Almaty.

Adriano Foglia, whose double in Araz Naxçivan's 6-4 third-place victory over Kairat Almaty made him the UEFA Futsal Cup finals' three-goal leading marksman, brushed off any individual plaudits to thank the Azerbaijani public for their support. The Italian No10 was unaware of his scoring exploits until informed by UEFA.com, such was his focus on the second-half fightback that saw Araz retrieve three separate deficits to finally outlast the deposed European champions in a ten-goal thriller. Foglia, who also found the target against FC Barcelona on Thursday, delighted in the bronze medal his team's bravery had earned in front of a noisy Baku crowd.

It was all about heart. We were really tired after putting in a great performance against Barcelona and it was really difficult today because Kairat are a top, top team. The first half we were awful but after half-time we got our game together. I'd like to dedicate this victory to Baku and to the people here in Azerbaijan – thanks for your support. I really enjoyed it out there because it was a battle, it was about heart, and we gave everything again. Our sacrifice paid off in the end because we got third place. It doesn't matter that I scored – and I didn't realise I was the top scorer – what I wanted was to help us claim the bronze medal. The Barcelona match definitely had an effect on our first-half display and it was also hard because of the way Kairat used the flying goalkeeper. But in the second half we improved and managed to eke out the victory.

Fumasa, Kairat forward
I think we've deserved more from our performances, both today against Araz and in the semi-final against Dynamo. Yes, Araz played well but a few things went against us, which was unfortunate. It was really disappointing to lose again. We came here as defending champions to try and retain the trophy. We knew it would be tough with some new players. I don't know if this group of players are all going to stay together but I do know that Kairat will be back. I think I played well, but like the team I could have done better. I've tried to do my best for Kairat over the last three years. If this is my last game for them, I'd like to thank the club for what they've done for me.
