Substitute Javi Martínez nodded in the extra-time goal that earned Bayern their second UEFA Super Cup triumph, after a sixth final in the last eight required the additional 30 minutes.

The COVID-19 pandemic had prompted a change of date to September and of venue from Porto to the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, with 15,180 fans able to attend.

Sevilla made the early running and were rewarded when Luuk de Jong headed a Jesús Navas cross into the path of Ivan Rakitić, causing David Alaba to fell the Croatian midfielder. Lucas Ocampos made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Thomas Müller highlights and reaction

Bayern ramped up the pressure with Yassine Bounou thwarting Robert Lewandowski. However, the Polish striker eventually set up the equaliser, cushioning Thomas Müller's centre into the path of Leon Goretzka, who finished confidently.

Sevilla had the best chance of the second half when substitute Youssef En-Nesyri surged through, only for Manuel Neuer to save the European champions. It was take two in extra time, with the Bayern custodian deflecting another En-Nesyri effort against a post. That proved a pivotal moment, because another replacement, Martínez, then nodded in after Bounou had parried Alaba's strike.

Back in 2013, Martínez's goal at the end of extra time had taken the match to penalties, enabling Bayern to beat Chelsea and win their first UEFA Super Cup. This time he ensured Bayern lifted the trophy for a second time. For Sevilla, though, it was a fifth loss in six appearances in the fixture.
