Barcelona won the UEFA Super Cup for the second time in six years with a comfortable 3-1 aggregate victory against European champions Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona had also defeated German opponents Werder Bremen to lift the trophy in 1993, and they had little trouble repeating the feat after a 2-0 first-leg triumph in early January at Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique opened the scoring after only eight minutes in front of 50,000 in the Catalan capital and Dortmund's hopes of getting back into the tie looked over when Rivaldo doubled Barça's lead from the penalty spot 16 minutes into the second half.

Barcelona had defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in Rotterdam to earn their date with the UEFA Champions League winners, whose 3-1 victory against Juventus had been Germany's first success in the competition since 1983. Dortmund had gone on to win the European/South American Cup, but against Barcelona they were to meet their match.

The return took place at the Westfalendstadion two months after the first leg, but any hopes the 32,500 Dortmund fans on hand had of witnessing a stirring recovery were quashed eight minutes into the game, Giovanni scoring to extend Barça's aggregate lead to 3-0.

Jörg Heinrich pulled a goal back for Dortmund midway through the second-half, but Louis van Gaal's side were able to hold out for victory.

Since that 1998 edition, the UEFA Super Cup has been staged as a single match at the Stade Louis II in Monaco as a curtain-raiser to the European club season.
