Goals herald start of UEFA Youth League

Real Sociedad de Fútbol 3-2 FC Shakhtar Donetsk
La Real recovered from an early setback to earn a hard-fought win. Captain Artur Miranyan gave the visitors an eighth-minute lead but they were soon pegged back as Mykola Matviyenko put through his own net. Real Sociedad were in the ascendancy, and goals from Jon Guridi and Jon Bautista left them 3-1 up at half-time. Shakhtar sought to find a way back into the game, but there was just three minutes left when Viktor Kovalenko reduced the arrears.

Manchester United FC 4-3 Bayer 04 Leverkusen
The hosts won a rollercoaster game televised by Eurosport despite ending with ten men, as an 89th-minute James Wilson penalty secured the three points. The game began as it ended, with Wilson finding the net in just the fourth minute. The United advantage was doubled shortly after through Ben Pearson's smart finish but the visitors were level before the break as Marc Brasnic struck twice in two minutes. The turnaround seemed complete when Maximilian Wagener put Leverkusen ahead but Andreas Pereira's 71st-minute equaliser and Wilson's winner snatched it despite Patrick McNair receiving a second yellow with 15 minutes remaining.

Galatasaray AŞ 1-1 Real Madrid CF
It was honours even in Istanbul as Galatasaray and Real Madrid exchanged goals in the space of 60 seconds in the first half. Hüseyin Altuğ Taş put the hosts ahead only for Juan José Narváez to immediately hit back and the Spanish side always looked the most likely winners from there on in, ultimately denied by a fine performance from goalkeeper Ismail Çipe.

FC København 2-2 Juventus
A hard-fought draw was settled in dramatic fashion as the hosts equalised from the spot four minutes into added time – captain Mikkel Wohlegemuth keeping his nerve to seal the draw. The hosts went ahead in the 12th minute as Juventus defender Vlad Marin turned into his own goal, but Andrea Zanchetta's side turned the tables as Pol García and Vajebah Sakor scored to put them ahead. Home pressure increased after Almpertos Roussos was dismissed for a second yellow in the 78th minute, culminating in Wohlegemuth's late leveller after Varga brought down Yones Felfel.

Group C
SL Benfica 3-0 RSC Anderlecht
Benfica made an ideal start to their group stage campaign as they recorded a confident victory against Anderlecht. Despite an even first period the hosts went in at the break a goal to the good after Rochinha struck in first-half added time. João Tralhão's side showed their class after the break, led by the talents of forwards Nuno Santos and Romário Baldé. It was the latter who doubled the advantage on the hour, before João Gomes wrapped things up in the 93rd minute.

Group D
FC Viktoria Plzeň 1-4 Manchester City FC
Austrian forward Sinan Bytyqi scored the first goal of the UEFA Youth League in the earliest kick-off, rattling in a free-kick after five minutes in Plzen as Patrick Vieira's side cruised towards a comfortable win. Captain Marcos Lopes scored twice and Devante Cole was on target for City too, though Miloš Kratochvíl got the biggest cheer of the day when he headed in for the home side on 51 minutes.

FC Bayern München 0-2 PFC CSKA Moskva
CSKA defeated Bayern thanks to second-half goals from Svyatoslav Georgievski and Viktor Borzykh. The hosts zipped the ball around nicely at Sportpark Heimstette, but it was CSKA who looked the more threatening. Georgievski was denied by a post in the opening period, before Bayern goalkeeper Raif Husic got down well to thwart Aleksei Kurzenev on the hour. Georgievski found a way through on 64 minutes, with Borzykh adding a second with two minutes left.

Group H
FC Barcelona 4-1 AFC Ajax
Ajax were forced to pay for missed opportunities as Barcelona recovered from 1-0 down to record a comprehensive-looking victory. Entering first-half added time the wonder was how the visitors only had Elton Acolatse's goal to show for their ascendancy. Xavi Quintillà then struck an unlikely equaliser following a corner and the complexion of the game changed completely going into the interval. It was all the hosts after the restart, two goals from Munir El Haddadi putting them on course for victory before substitute Ebwelle iced the cake.
