Benfica, Manchester City seal top-two finishes

Benfica and Manchester City have at least qualified for the knockout play-offs, while Atlético Madrid are on the verge of emulating them after a Roberto Nuñez-inspired 9-0 win.

  • Benfica and Manchester City confirm their progress from the group stage
  • Eight group winners qualify for the round of 16; the runners-up go into the play-offs
  • Roberto Nuñez scores four as Atlético Madrid thrash Astana 9-0
  • Real Madrid move into second place in Group A after defeating Paris
  • Mönchengladbach, PSV and Shakhtar Donetsk post their first wins

Group A
Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 Malmö
The visitors made a fantastic start, taking the lead through Isak Redzic, but Vladyslav Buhai levelled before the break. Shakhtar were much improved in the second period, with Giorgi Arabidze putting in an excellent performance. Oleksandr Pikhalonok scored from the spot after a foul on the Georgian forward and then set up the third for Artur Avagimian.

Highlights: Real Madrid 2-0 Paris

Real Madrid 2-0 Paris
Madrid cut Paris's cushion at the top of the group to a point, moving above Malmö into second place in the process. José Carlos Lazo, teed up by Cristián Cedrés, made it 1-0 midway through the first half. Borja Mayoral doubled the advantage 12 minutes into the second period, slotting Lazo's lay-off past Rémy Descamps. Madrid's Luca Zidane produced a number of fine saves to deny his compatriots and preserve the Spanish side's lead.

Group B
Manchester United 0-0 CSKA Moskva
The game opened up in the second half with Matthew Willock, substitute Marcus Rashford and Callum Gribbin testing CSKA keeper Ilya Pomazun – Gribbin forcing a superb fingertip save with a curling effort from the edge of the box. CSKA's Aleksandr Makarov had an added-time attempt saved by Dean Henderson. Pacesetters CSKA are three points clear of second-placed United.

PSV 2-1 Wolfsburg
Putaro's 90th-minute equaliser seemed to have earned Wolfsburg a draw, only for Joey Konings to have the final say with a stoppage-time clincher that breathed new life into PSV's campaign. PSV join their opponents on four points, one behind United.

Group C
Astana 0-9 Atlético
The Kazakh team endured another punishing defeat, eclipsing their 8-0 loss at Benfica on matchday one. Roberto Nuñez had scored twice in a 7-1 home win against Astana last time out, and hit four in the return – including two in the space of a minute – with five more players on target. Point-less Astana, with a -26 goal difference, are out of contention.

Benfica 2-0 Galatasaray
There was no repeat of the 11-1 thrashing the Eagles inflicted upon Galatasaray on matchday three, but it was a comfortable enough success for Benfica, who fielded a much-changed lineup for the return fixture. Oliver Sarkic and João Carvalho both netted, with victory ensuring the Portuguese side progress from the group stage.

Highlights: Sevilla 0-2 Manchester City

Group D
Mönchengladbach 3-2 Juventus
The visitors dominated the first half but were stung twice on the break, Tsiy-William Ndenge converting a fourth-minute penalty before making it 2-0 with an innocuous-looking shot that slipped past Mattia Del Favero. Joshua Holtby got Borussia's third on the counter just after half-time, though two late Juve strikes took some of the gloss off Gladbach's victory.

Sevilla 0-2 Manchester City
A Thierry Ambrose double secured City at least a play-off spot. Ambrose won a header and then beat Genaro to the dropping ball before racing through and slotting past Juan Soriano. Again the brighter team after the interval, Sevilla were made to pay for their profligacy when Ambrose tapped in David Faupala's pass across goal. That came after City captain Kean Bryan and Sevilla's Eliseo were dismissed for their involvement in separate incidents inside the last ten minutes.
