Article body
Duo emerge undefeated
The two sides were clearly the best in the section, both emerging undefeated with Russia finishing top by virture of marginally better goal difference.
Lithuania finish third
Going into the final set of games Russia and Iceland were both assured of a place in the second qualifying round having won their first two games. The mini-tournament finished with the two countries drawing 0-0 while hosts Lithuania beat Albania 3-2 to secure third place in the section. However Lithuania's overall performance in the group will not be enough to see them clinch the second-round berth reserved for the best third-placed side in round one - a position Croatia currently hold.
Crushing win
Russia had begun the tournament with a crushing 5-0 victory against the Lithuanians, Denis Bolshakov scoring twice. Meanwhile Iceland opened their account with a 3-1 win against the Albanians.
Round to spare
Next up, the Lithuanians were on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline against Iceland, with Sigvaldason and Vilhjalmsson both scoring twice while the hosts had defender Dmitrij Siskin sent off. The same day, Russia put four goals past Albania without reply, Bolshakov again netting, to ensure that the qualification issues were settled with a round of games still remaining.
