Finland got the 2003/04 UEFA European Under-17 Championship off to a flying start with a 3-0 victory against Malta in the Group 2 mini-tournament.
Eremenko on the mark
The section hosts registered the first goal of the new championship after just two minutes when Russian-born Roma Eremenko headed into the net, via the crossbar, after a Eero Korte cross from the right, leaving goalkeeper Kyle Micallef with no chance.
Weckström follows up
The Finns doubled their lead midway through the first period through Manchester United FC youngster Jami Puustinen. Malta improved after half-time and succeeded in tempering the threat of Tim Sparv and Eremenko. However Finland added a third in the 69th minute when Alexander Weckström followed up Puustinen's shot and finished at the back post.
Liekoski satisfaction
Finland coach Timo Liekoski said: "This is a perfect start to the tournament, although I am not satisfied with our second-half [performance]," he said. "Our guys lost concentration and we let Malta pressure us."
Miller praise
Meanwhile, Malta coach Mark Miller praised the victors. "This was a match between boys and men," he said. "I have to give credit to my players, as most of them today were playing their first international. Finland looked like they will make it to the second round."
Top two go through
The top two sides in the group will reach the next round, with Croatia and Northern ireland meeting later today in the next match in the section.
