Group B reaction: Both coaches agreed that Germany outplayed the Czech Republic in the 0-0 draw that keeps the pair in control of the group.
Article body
The coaches of Germany and the Czech Republic were in agreement that Bernd Stöber's outfit dominated Jakub Dovalil's side in their 0-0 draw which keeps them both three points clear of their UEFA European Under-17 Championship Group B rivals Belgium and Serbia and Montenegro. Those teams finished 1-1 in their match thanks to a late Serbo-Montenegrin equaliser not long after Belgium had taken the lead. Despite that, the Belgium coach was the happier of the two, as uefa.com rounds up tonight's reaction.
GERMANY 0-0 CZECH REPUBLIC
Bernd Stöber, Germany coach
This was a very good game, we played well and dominated. It is a pity that the only thing that was lacking was goals. We have three or four very good chances but were not able to score. The players are a bit sad because with one goal they would have been through to the semi-finals. But it is good for the tournament to keep the tension high. For a German team they showed good skill and I am satisfied with their performance.
Jakub Dovalil, Czech Republic coach
We knew that Germany were strong and have dangerous attacking players. So we decided to play the 4-1-4-1 system from the beginning, which meant we had to keep the ball down. But our players did not play the system very well, I don't know why, there were too many long balls. In the first half Germany were obviously stronger but we were better in the last 15 minutes of the half and we reached our goal for half-time, which was 0-0. I thank our goalkeeper Marek Štěch, and Ondřej Mazuch performed very well. Germany have not lost this season so I am quite satisfied with our performance. I am a bit disappointed, though, because the game was live on TV and I would have liked our team to produce a good performance but they were not able to, maybe they didn't sleep well last night.
BELGUM 1-1 SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO
Eric Abrams, Belgium coach
The players that had disappointed me [in losing 4-0 to Germany] played much better tonight, like Axel Witsel, Cor Gillis. Gael Arend can do much better I think, but his back is hurting him. We wanted to return to our usual level of organisation for this game. We spoke with the players, and maybe they were too nervous in the first game, with the TV and everything. This time I told them: "There's no TV today," and we have showed how we can play. We expected an attacking Serbia and Montenegro and they were. On the other hand, we had our chances too.
Sasa Medin, Serbia and Montenegro coach
It was a difficult game for both teams having lost their first. Both needed to win. It was an open game during the 80 minutes. We missed our chances and were punished for that, also because of a mistake by our defence. When we should have scored, we conceded a goal. And when Belgium scored and played better, that's when we equalised! We were lucky to score at that moment. We have a big problem in scoring goals.
