Article body
Serbia and Montenegro recovered from their heartbreaking loss on the opening day of UEFA European Under-17 Championship Elite round Group 6 to defeat Romania in the Republic of Ireland and keep their qualification hopes alive.
Lead defended
A penalty deep into added time gave Israel a 2-1 comeback win against Serbia and Montenegro two days ago, leaving them with an uphill task if they were to earn the one available place in May's finals in Luxembourg. But Sasa Medin's team took the lead today through Nikola Gulan's spot-kick midway through the first half, and this time held on to take the points against a team who fell 4-0 to Ireland in their first fixture and are now out.
One-point gap
Ireland later scored a late equaliser to hold Israel 1-1 and prevent their opponents qualifying with a match to spare. Serbia and Montenegro trail the top two by a point, and In Friday's last games must defeat Ireland and hope Romania do not lose to Israel.
