Austrian success
Victories against Belgium and Northern Ireland ensured Austria had secured first place even before their 11-0 defeat of mini-tournament hosts Lichtenstein, whose next games in the U17 Championship will come when they stage the 2009/10 finals. Belgium only needed a draw against Northern Ireland to join Austria in the Elite round in spring and in the event secured a 2-0 victory.

Duffy winner
Northern Ireland had a happier start to their campaign when a 73rd-minute Shane Duffy penalty gave them a 1-0 win against Liechtenstein. Austria beat Belgium 2-0 with first-half goals by Christoph Knasmüller and David Alaba.

First place secure
Knasmüller struck again 15 minutes into Austria's game against Northern Ireland for what proved the only goal of the game and their progress was secure as Belgium overcame Liechtenstein 5-2. Andreas Luckermans's 16th-minute goal was cancelled out by Sandro Wieser but Gaetan Lambreghts struck either side of half-time. Wieser swiftly pulled one back but Lambreghts immediately completed a hat-trick and Marnick Vermijl completed the scoring.

Belgium through
The margin of victory gave Belgium the edge over Northern Ireland before their decider and Lambreghts and Alexander Maes scored at either end of the second half to secure second place. Austria celebrated their own place in the 4 December draw with a comfortable win against Liechtenstein; Philipp Prosenik managed four goals, Alexander Aschauer a hat-trick and Philipp Grafl struck twice late on after further efforts from fellow substitute Daniel Offenbacher and Konstantin Kerschbaumer.
