Israel pipped
While Denmark wrapped up first place in qualifying phase Group 2 with a match to spare after wins against Romania and Israel, that pair met for the runners-up berth today separated only on goal difference. Romania, who defeated Lithuania 5-0 to Israel's 3-1, needed only a draw against the mini-tournament hosts and picked up a 2-1 win.
Denmark in control
From Matchday 1, Denmark were in control of the group as they beat Romania 3-0. Rasmus Falk Jensen and Nicolai Møller Boilesen struck in the first 22 minutes and Christian Eriksen added another just past the hour. Israel defeated Lithuania 3-1 with all the goals coming after the break; Dror Degu's 55th-minute strike was cancelled out by Mantas Juozapaitis but Rashid Adwi and Idan Shafsha ensured victory for the home side.
Romania recover
Romania bounced back two days later against Lithuania. Patrick Walleth and David Andrei both scored in either half with substitute Romario Benzar also on target. That allowed Denmark to clinch top spot with a 4-1 win against Israel. Mark Gundelach and Daniel Norouzi struck in the last six minutes of the first half and Falk Jensen added a third on the hour mark. He was immediately replaced by Jonas Jorgen Larsen, who took three minutes to make it four, though another substitute, Harel Polak, did manage a consolation. However, after their loss to Romania, Israel are now out as they cannot finish as one of the two third-placed teams in the 13 groups with the best record against the leading pair.
