Duo through
The two nations have reached more U17 final tournaments than any other countries and Spain are bidding for their third straight title, but their first since the retirement of long-time coach Juan Santisteban. With Ginés Meléndez in charge, Spain won their first two games on home soil in Tenerife against Estonia and Armenia and although England were held by the latter nation, a 1-1 draw with the reigning champions booked their progress without defeat.

Spain soar
Spain took charge of the group on Matchday 1 against Estonia, winning 6-0 with all the goals in the first 29 minutes. Bastón, Pablo Sarabia, Alex and Izco struck in the opening quarter-hour and Jordi Amat added another. Izco scored again and there was a second-half substitute appearance for the sole survivor from last season's victorious squad in Turkey, Carmona. By contrast, England were held 0-0 by Armenia.

England strike seven
England found form two days later to beat Estonia 7-0. Tom Parkes and Jose Baxter scored in the first half and Jonjo Shelvey and Luke Freeman found the target before a Joonas Tam own goal was followed by Billy Knott and Ryan Tunnicliffe strikes. Pablo Sarabia and Bastón claimed goals in Spain's 2-0 defeat of Armenia.

Own goals
That took Spain through but they looked as if they were finishing second in the group after Albert Blázquez's eleventh-minute own goal against England. But England duo Eddie Oshodi and Emmanuel Frimpong were sent off for second bookings and with a minute left on the clock substitute Ezekiel Fryers scored in his own net to ensure a draw and top spot for Spain. Hannes Anier's goal gave Estonia a 1-0 win against Armenia and third place.
