Ukraine's bid to reach the finals of the 2005/06 UEFA European Under-19 Championship got off to a solid start as second-half goals from Olexandr Gladkyy and Serhiy Voronin, the latter a last-minute winner, earned a 2-1 success against Switzerland in the opening round of fixtures in Elite round Group 4.
Voronin winner
Gladkyy broke the deadlock in Donetsk early in the second half, slotting in after a goalmouth scramble as the Swiss failed to clear a corner. The lead lasted just five minutes, however, Zdravko Kuzmanovic scoring off the post with a fine strike from 22 metres out. That goal seemed to have ensured the match would finish all square, but in stoppage time Switzerland conceded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area and Voronin curled the ball just under the crossbar.
'Decisive mistake'
"A draw would have been a fair outcome but our opponents made a decisive mistake," said Ukraine coach Anatoliy Buznik. His side next play the Czech Republic on Friday, with the Swiss seeking to get their campaign back on track against Denmark the same day.
