Germany coach Horst Hrubesch hailed his side's powers of concentration after goals from Richard Sukuta-Pasu and Ömer Toprak ended Spain's 23-match unbeaten run in the first round of matches in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship Group A. The defeat also severely dented the holders' hopes of claiming a fifth title at this level in seven seasons although coach Ginés Meléndez believes the experience could prove valuable for his side. Hungary coach Tibor Sisa was understandably upbeat as Krisztián Németh's early goal proved enough to beat fellow newcomers Bulgaria in the section's first game, although his Bulgarian counterpart Mihail Madanski plans to stick to the approach that got his side to these finals for the first time. uefa.com hears from the four coaches.
GERMANY 2-1 SPAIN
Horst Hrubesch, Germany coach
We've won and I think we deserved to. That was our first aim at this tournament. We had to use a lot of energy against a Spain team who were very strong, as we expected them to be. We showed good concentration against a team who have been successful for a long time. In the second half we should have made more of our chances on the counterattack, but overall of course I have to be happy with the result.
Ginés Meléndez, Spain coach
We're very disappointed of course, we had been unbeaten for a long time but we will try to take this as a guideline for the next two matches. We must learn from our mistakes for those games. Germany were much stronger than we expected, they scored their goals at the right times – every time we were able to put them under pressure they scored, so that was a crucial reason why we couldn't get anything from the match. We played against very strong opponents tonight.
BULGARIA 0-1 HUNGARY
Tibor Sisa, Hungary coach
It was a typical finals match – every team is very strong at this tournament and it was really tough. I'd seen Bulgaria play before and I knew they were a very good team and they proved that again today. We played just as well, deserved to win and now we're already thinking about the next game. There's always pressure on the first match, everyone wants to win and that's very hard for the players to deal with. We've won and we can still play better in the next game. Bulgaria are a very well-organised team, they have some good players and we saw that today. I think they could surprise people in this group.
Mihail Madanski, Bulgaria coach
It was a good game, I'm sorry we've lost it but we didn't get anything because we didn't take our chances against a good team. Despite this loss, for us the championship begins now. We will play in this style until the end of the group. As a result it's disappointing, but we performed very well and that's some consolation. We did well but obviously it's not a good result. In this tournament, results are what count – not performances. I knew Hungary were a good team and they confirmed that today.
