Group 10: Italy knocked out

Portugal beat Italy to reach the 2001/02 UEFA European Under-19 Championship intermediary round.

Portugal have qualified for the 2001/02 UEFA European Under-19 Championship intermediary round after upsetting hosts Italy in the Group 10 mini-tournament.

Key match
The Portuguese opened their campaign with a 2-0 win against Moldova while the Italians saw off Belarus by the same score. A 2-1 win over the Italians in their second game, secured thanks to goals from Luis Carlos Lourenço Da Silva (nine minutes) and Hugo Miguel Ferreira Viana (81 minutes) and the sending off of Italy’s Cesare Bovo, put the Portuguese through to the next round. The result meant they could not be overhauled at the top of the table.

Top two level
In the event Italy’s 4-0 win against Moldova in their final game and Portugal’s shock 2-1 defeat against Belarus ensured that the top two sides finished level on six points apiece, providing the hosts with some consolation for their failure to qualify.
