Hosts Slovenia and Yugoslavia edged Scotland out of the 2002/03 UEFA European Under-19 Championship after a tight Group 10 mini-tournament.

Goal difference decisive
All three countries finished level on six points with Slovenia and Yugoslavia filling the two qualification places due to their superior goal difference in matches between the tied countries. Scotland started the mini-tournament in excellent form, two goals from Craig Beattie earning a 2-1 win against Slovenia.

Yugoslavia open with win
Meanwhile, Yugoslavia's campaign opened with a 3-1 victory against Iceland, with Dragan Mrdja, Dušan Basta and Dejan Milovanovic scoring the goals. All three players were on target again in their country's next game, a 4-1 win against the Scots which took them to the verge of the next round. Slovenia also put themselves back into contention for qualification with a 2-1 win against Iceland, Dejan Robnik and Marko Božic scoring the goals.

Scotland win in vain
In a tense finale Slovenia found their best form in soundly beating Yugoslavia 4-1, with Robnik and Zlatko Dedic both scoring twice. That result meant that Scotland's 2-1 win against Iceland, with Beattie again scoring twice including a last-minute winner, proved in vain.

Second-round groups
In the second qualifying round Slovenia will go into Group 4, joining Republic of Ireland, Switzerland and whichever side wins first qualifying round Group 3. Yugoslavia will face Austria and two other as yet unknown countries in Group 5.
