Maximum points
Twenty-two sides from across Europe progressed via the first qualifying round to join the six seeded sides in the next stage. Hungary and Northern Ireland were the final sides to book their places after the completion of the Group 11 mini-tournament. Hungary won all three of their games, scoring eleven goals and conceding just two in the process.
Impressive qualifiers
Other impressive qualifiers so far have included Stuart Baxter's England, who won all three of their Group 3 games, scoring 16 goals. England's record was bettered only by Germany, who scored 21 goals en route to getting maximum points in Group 5.
Surprise sides
Among the sides in the second round are surprise packages F.Y.R. Macedonia, whose victories against Romania and Moldova saw them progress from Group 3, and Latvia, who finished ahead of Turkey and Finland in Group 4 to clinch their place.
Winners only
Only the top side from each second qualifying round group will reach next summer's finals in Liechtenstein, so the stakes will be high in all seven groups, which are listed below. Spain, the reigning champions, have a tough task with France, Israel and Poland in their section.
