More youth success for Austrians

Austria's success at youth levels continues unabated after they secured qualification for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Good week
With Ernst Weber's U17 side progressing to the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship this week it has been a good few days for Austrian football - giving cause for optimism as the country embark on the long road towards co-hosting EURO 2008.

Final-day win
A 2-0 final-day victory against Serbia and Montenegro ensured Austria's place in the finals, which will take place from 16-26 July. Both sides went into the final game on six points. Austria having began their campaign with a 3-1 win against F.Y.R. Macedonia and a 4-0 triumph against Cyprus. Meanwhile Serbia overcame the Cypriots 5-1 and the Macedonians 5-0.

Other qualifiers
Given their superior goal difference a draw against the Austrians would have been enough for the Serbians to progress but goals from Jürgen Säumel (20 minutes) and Ernst Öbster (81 minutes) secured Austria's place in the finals, where they will join hosts Liechtenstein and fellow qualifiers France, Portugal, Norway and Italy. Two more qualifiers are still to be determined.
