Säumel stuns England

England 1-2 Austria Austria edge a win thanks to a goal on the hour by Jürgen Säumel.

Perfect start
Despite a first-half downpour in Schaan, Austria made the perfect start on their first appearance in the final round in 21 years. It took just five minutes for Mössner to put them ahead as he headed in following a corner.

Downing free-kick
Austria controlled the first 25 minutes but England gradually began to find their passes in midfield and they drew level nine minutes before the break from a Downing free-kick. The Middlesbrough FC midfield player struck from 20 metres, his effort taking a slight deflection off the Austrian wall on its way into the top left-hand corner.

Memorable winner
Austria almost produced an instant reply but Luke Steele in the England goal kept out Klaus Salmutter's close-range effort. Instead they waited until after the break, and the 60th minute, when Säumel dribbled his way past three England defenders before chipping the ball over Steele for a memorable winner.

Schumacher sees red
England threatened to equalise on more than one occasion. From a Wayne Routledge cross, Downing shot just over the crossbar. Then, on 76 minutes, Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer did superbly well to readjust and keep out a deflected shot. An equaliser would not come, however, and England's frustration was compounded by the late sending-off of substitute Steven Schumacher following a second yellow card.
