Paulo Sérgio saves Portugal

Two goals from substitute Paulo Sérgio earned Portugal a 2-2 draw with Norway and clinched a semi-final place.

Austria next
The Sporting Clube de Portugal forward struck on 61 and 80 minutes to cancel out goals from Olav Tuelo Johannesen and Daniel Fredheim Holm and earn the Portuguese a semi-final against Austria as Group A runners-up behind Italy. Carlos Dinis had sent on Paulo Sérgio and fellow striker Fonseca just before half-time in an attempt to revive Portugal's fortunes.

Holm doubles lead
Norway made the perfect start when Johannesen got past Miguel Angelo and beat Paulo Ribeiro from close range after just three minutes. Holm doubled their lead on the counterattack in the 22nd minute, striking a fierce shot which Paulo Ribeiro got a hand to but could not keep out.

Close calls
Two goals down, Portugal began creating chances of their own. Hugo Almeida forced a fine save from Norway captain Rune Almenning Jarstein with a fierce shot after the ball rebounded to him following a free-kick. Organista went close twice with shots from distance before, on the stroke of half-time, Paulo Sérgio beat three defenders and fired narrowly wide.

Missed chances
Norway could have killed the match in the early stages of the second half. Petter Vaagan Moen twice rounded the goalkeeper but shot first into the side-netting and then over the crossbar. Holm twice had only the goalkeeper to beat but failed to finish.

Volleyed finish
Instead Portugal received a lifeline when Paulo Sérgio beat Jarstein at the second attempt on 61 minutes. The Sporting striker completed the comeback ten minutes from time with a far-post volley after Hugo Almeida and then Fonseca had flicked on a cross into the box.
