Berrettini expects 'great final'

Italy coach Paolo Berrettini predicted a "great final" against Portugal after beating the Czech Republic.

Portuguese threat
"I think in the end it will be a great final, Italy versus Portugal," said Berrettini. "Portugal have greater experience and they are masters of possession and have strong character. They made life difficult for us in the first match [a 1-1 draw in the group stage] especially with the two wide attackers."

'Deserved win'
Berrettini felt Italy more than deserved their semi-final win, which was secured by Giampaolo Pazzini's second-half goal. "It was a good game, especially by Italy. In the second half they made things difficult for us. It was a physical game but an interesting one. I think we deserved the result in the end but you have to credit the Czechs for the way they chased the equaliser."

Lodi sacrificed
Berrettini left out the Italian captain Francesco Lodi for the match and explained afterwards he had "sacrificed him for tactical reasons". He said: "I went for a solid team with four in defence and midfield and [Luigi] Della Rocca up front alongside Pazzini to give us two strong front men."

'We made one mistake'
Czech coach Michal Bílek said his side had paid for their only mistake of the match, a mix-up between goalkeeper Tomáš Cerný and Lukáš Nachtman from which Pazzini profited. "We only made one mistake - it was a misunderstanding between the defender and the goalkeeper and this was the only one.

No clear chances
"We were unlucky in the last minute when [Ladislav Volešák] hit the post from the free-kick. But the Italians played very well in defence and we didn't have any clear chances. We wanted to play down the flanks but because of Italy's defensive strength we couldn't get in and so ended up playing long balls."

Mikolanda missed
Bílek felt his side had missed suspended striker Petr Mikolanda, whom he nominated as one of the Czechs' players of the tournament, together with Roman Hubník and Volešák. "Maybe if he'd played it would have been different. He was our top scorer in qualifying and in this tournament too. We're disappointed after this match but the tournament as a whole was excellent and our players did the best they could."
