Russia off and running

Romania 0-2 Russia Ravil Sabitov's side make the perfect start with an opening victory in Group 5.

Romania's hopes of qualifying for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship got off to the worst possible start as Dan Firiteanu's side suffered a 2-0 defeat by Russia in the opening match in Group 5.

Winning starts
The result left Russia level on points with Turkey – 2-1 winners against Croatia in today's other game in the section – at the head of the standings, while Romania and Croatia are yet to record their first points in the section. Firiteanu's charges next face mini-tournament hosts Turkey on Wednesday, with Russia playing Croatia the same day.

Limited opportunities
The first half at the Söke City stadium was an even affair, with neither side able to take a grip on the game. Goalscoring chances were few and far between, with play broken up by a succession of fouls.

Russian pressure
However, both teams began the second period in more positive fashion, with Russia taking control in the first ten minutes of the match. Although Ravil Sabitov's side were initially unable to make their pressure count, the breakthrough did finally arrive 20 minutes into the second half.

Decisive goals
Forward Victor Borissov broke the deadlock in the 65th minute and, although Romania strove hard for a route back into the match, Nikita Bazhenov's second goal six minutes from time all but ended their hopes. Romania's misery was compounded two minutes later as Sorin Nicusor Radoi was shown the red card.
