Article body
Ukraine made the perfect start to their bid to reach the 2004 UEFA European Under-19 Championship as they earned a narrow 1-0 victory against Denmark in Velenje.
Three points
The victory left Pavlo Yakovenko's side level with min-tournaments hosts Slovenia – 2-1 winners against England – on three points at the top of qualifying Group 4. Ukraine next face the Slovenians in Maribor on Friday, while the Danes will be seeking to get their own qualifying bid back on course against England in Kidricevo.
Proshyn strikes
In an even contest at the Ob Jezeru stadium, home of NK Rudar Velenje, both sides had chances to take the points, but in the end it was a 73rd-minute strike from Ukraine defender Andriy Proshyn that separated the sides. Denmark battled bravely for a way back into the match but were unable to find an equalising goal, and Ukraine held on to take all three points.
