Two first-half goals from Borut Semler gave Group 4 hosts Slovenia all three points against England in Celje.
Striking success
The Slovenian striker found the net at the start and end of the first period to secure victory for Branko Zupan's side and leave the mini-tournament hosts level with Ukraine, 1-0 victors against Denmark in Wednesday's game between the two other sides in the section. Slovenia next play Ukraine on Friday, with England coming up against the Danes the same day.
Perfect start
The home side made the perfect start at NK Gorica's Športni Park stadium, taking the lead after only seven minutes through Semler. Although Everton FC midfield player Scott Brown equalised for England eight minutes before half-time, Semler restored Slovenia's advantage on the stroke of the interval with his second of the match.
Stout defending
Both sides had further chances in the second period, with England increasingly pressing forward in search of a second equaliser, but the home side held firm to begin their bid to reach this summer's final tournament in Switzerland in ideal fashion.
