Holmes bolsters group hosts' hopes

England 1-0 Denmark Lee Holmes' first-half volley gets the home side of to a winning start in Group 1.

England made a winning start on home soil to their UEFA European Under-19 Championship campaign with victory against Elite round Group 1 rivals Denmark in Crewe.

Having received a bye to this round, England dominated and scored on 26 minutes when Ryan Smith's cross was volleyed in at the far post by Lee Holmes past Kasper Schmeichel of Manchester City FC, the son of former international Peter. England remained on top, but could not add to their lead.

'Very pleasing'
Victorious coach Martin Hunter told TheFA.com: "The first game is always the most difficult, so to win and obtain a clean sheet is very pleasing." On Monday his team play Sweden, fresh from defeating Denmark's next opponents Moldova today.
