Republic of Ireland 1-1 Albania A draw is not enough to save either teams' chances of qualification.
Article body
Albania and the Republic of Ireland saw their UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualification hopes end with a draw in their second Elite round Group 7 fixtures.
Victory needed
Both teams had lost their first matches in Serbia and Montenegro - Albania going down 7-1 to the hosts and the Irish defeated 1-0 by Poland - meaning that victory was imperative for both teams in Kula. Ireland had most of the possession but were allowed little sight of goal, as Albania dealt comfortably with their high balls.
Fate sealed
Just before the hour, Albania went in front as Vangjel Mile added to his goal on Monday as he pounced on a long ball from defence. Ireland levelled on 78 minutes through Ian Morris, and although Andy Keogh had the ball in the net in added time, his effort was disallowed. Serbia and Montenegro's win against Poland then sealed both these teams' fate and ensured the hosts of a place in Northern Ireland in July.
Closing games
Both Ireland and Albania still have third place to play for, with Sean McCaffrey's team ahead of goal difference as they face Serbia and Montenegro in Novi Sad on Friday, when Poland are Albania's opponents here in Kula.
