Turkey draw takes Ukraine through

A 2-2 draw against Turkey sent Ukraine into the last 16 of the FIFA World Youth Championship as Spain won again.

Early opener
Both teams began the day on three points, three behind section leaders China, who secured first place with a 4-1 win against Panama. In Doetinchem, meanwhile, Ukraine took the lead in the fifth minute, Aliyev striking his fourth goal of the competition to give Oleksii Mykhailychenko's side an early advantage.

Competitive contest
This lasted only three minutes, however, Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Sezer Öztürk levelling from the penalty spot. In a competitive encounter which featured nine yellow cards, Ukraine regained the upper hand in the 19th minute, Aliyev registering again.

Nervous wait
Turkey's hopes received another boost eight minutes before the break as their opponents were reduced to ten men, Ukraine forward Sergiy Silyuk being dismissed for a second bookable offence. Turkey duly equalised for a second time eight minutes into the second period through Öztürk, but could not find a winner and now must hope other results go their way when the remaining four sections are concluded on Saturday to leave them as one of the best third-placed teams. Ukraine will face the side finishing second in Group F in the last 16 on 22 June.

Spanish success
Earlier on Friday, UEFA European Under-19 Championship holders Spain continued their impressive form, recording a third straight Group C victory as a 3-0 win against Honduras clinched the pool by three points. Iñaki Sáez's team had scored ten goals in defeating Morocco and Chile in their first two games, to advance to the last 16, and were quickly into their stride at the De Vijverberg stadium in Doetinchem.

Silva service
RCD Espanyol midfielder Jona opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute, with striker Silva doubling up seven minutes before half-time, his fourth goal of the finals. The win was completed seven minutes past the hour thanks to Víctor's strike, although Spain ended the match with ten men as substitute goalkeeper Roberto was sent off eleven minutes from time - just three minutes after coming on. Remarkably, Jona went in goal and saved Ramón Núñez's resulting penalty.

Last-16 task
Spain will play one of the four third-placed sides in the last 16. Morocco, meanwhile, claimed the runners-up spot in the section with a 1-0 triumph against Chile, Tarik Bendamou sealing the points two minutes into first-half added time.
