Article body
Turkey coach Cem Pamiroğlu was left to reflect on the latest part of his "three-step master plan" after İlhan Parlak's hat-trick goal kept their UEFA European Under-19 Championship hopes alive by earning a last-gasp draw against Portugal. Spain's Ginés Meléndez spoke of the brilliance of his team after they defeated Scotland 4-0 to win Group B; ominous words for Portuguese counterpart Carlos Dinis who was understandably downcast. uefa.com rounds up the reaction.
PORTUGAL 4-4 TURKEY
Cem Pamiroğlu, Turkey coach
It was an exciting match and we certainly didn't deserve to lose. I thought we were strong throughout but we kept making mistakes at the back which were punished. We came close to exiting the competition but it is all part of a progressive three-step master plan: we lost the first game, drew the second and so we'll win the third against Scotland! We played a couple of friendlies before the tournament and our defence was good. I don't know what's happened; they are just not playing to their full potential. At the other end all of the sides here have good strikers, it's just that we seem to have the best in İlhan.
Carlos Dinis, Portugal coach
Given the circumstances we're going away thinking we've lost two points, not picked up one. It was an intense, entertaining match and we controlled it until the end but couldn't hold out. There are positives to take from the match. We showed great team spirit and the players never stopped fighting despite the heat. It's very tough out here with the hot weather. İlhan and Diogo Tavares both had excellent games. It will be very difficult to bounce back from this. Our most important task now is to get the players recovered physically – mentally they are strong.
SCOTLAND 0-4 SPAIN
Tommy Wilson, Scotland coach
Spain are an excellent team, probably the best I've met in the two years I've been involved at this level, including the France team we eliminated [in the Elite round]. A team of such quality is really very difficult to beat. They are regular finalists and winners of this competition. We twice conceded from corners which is disappointing; my players simply couldn't do it, although I'm confident we can go through. We started the tournament with a point and we still have a chance against Turkey.
Ginés Meléndez, Spain coach
We played brilliantly in the first half, some really good quality football. It's inevitable that the players are going to ease off when they go 3-0 up, but we were on top throughout the match. The only negative moment came in the second half with the injury to Gerard Piqué but we are group winners now so we can look to rest players in the match against Portugal on Sunday.
