Scotland manager Archie Gemmill was "exceptionally proud" of his side's achievement as they survived a late Turkey fightback to claim the runners-up berth in UEFA European Under-19 Championship Group B and a place in the semi-finals thanks to Portugal's 1-1 draw with section winners Spain. Cem Pamiroğlu was understandably downbeat despite Turkey scoring nine goals in their three games, while Portugal's Carlos Dinis took consolation from his side's qualification for next year's FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. uefa.com collects the best of the reaction.
TURKEY 2-3 SCOTLAND
Archie Gemmill, Scotland team manager
I thought we played exceptionally well for most of the match, although to give away two goals in quick succession obviously put us under tremendous pressure. We weathered that and we started to come back towards the end of the match. I wasn't concerned with the Portugal game, I was just focused on our own match. I was always confident we'd get through – that's a lie. The lads have got to take the credit for the work they've put in, we were confident of beating Turkey so it was just a question of what happened in the other match. I've thanked the lads for their efforts and told them I'm exceptionally proud to be their manager.
Cem Pamiroğlu, Turkey coach
We've certainly been entertaining. I believed in my team from the first whistle to the last, but I can't legislate for individual mistakes. I can't believe some of our play, and the defeat here. We had a chance at 3-2 but when Mevlüt Erding hit the post with ten minutes left, I knew it wasn't going to be our day. Of our three matches at these finals, we didn't play so well in certain periods but most of the time our football was very good. I still believe and trust in this team but we couldn't take our chances at this tournament. I want to congratulate Spain and Scotland, I hope they both do very well in the semi-finals.
PORTUGAL 1–1 SPAIN
Carlos Dinis, Portugal coach
Unfortunately the result is insufficient for us to get into the semi-finals, although we are of course delighted with our qualification for the World Cup. We had a few opportunities for a second goal but couldn't take them, and the fact that the Spanish goal came very early in the second half was a shock for our team and made things tougher. In general I have to say that I'm happy with my players; this is a generation that has achieved a lot, playing in the European U17 and U19 Championship and the [UEFA-CAF] Meridian Cup, and now we have a World Cup to come.
Ginés Meléndez, Spain coach
I am satisfied with my team's performance, particularly in the second half. In the first period we didn't manage to move the ball around very well but my players kept pushing; those that had not played in the previous matches were especially motivated to do well here. Portugal were very strong going forward with a number of good players, such as Bruno Gama and Hélder Barbosa, but their defence is not so strong.
