Iceland make belated progress

After three weeks of waiting Iceland now know they will advance for the first time from the qualifying round as the best third-placed team.

After three weeks of waiting Iceland now know they will play in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite round for the first time after being confirmed as the best third-placed team from the 12 qualifying round groups.

Iceland place confirmed
Only results against the top two teams in a pool count for this ranking, which was good news for Iceland as although they finished third in Group 6 in a three-way tie breaker with Poland and Sweden, their record in games against that pair put them into the lead in that reckoning, ahead of Albania by a single goal. Iceland still had to wait for five more mini-tournaments to be played, but they are now able to breathe a sigh of relief as after two rounds of games in the last pool, Group 10, none of the teams that can finish third will be able to better their record.

One berth remaining
In that group Turkey have already sealed their place in the 5 December Elite round draw alongside Iceland, with either the Czech Republic or mini-tournament hosts Luxembourg to join that pair and 25 other teams after Sunday's deciding fixtures. Seven teams will progress from the Elite round to join hosts Austria in the finals from 16-27 July.
