Gleeful Germany earn finals chance

Bulgaria 0-2 Germany First-half goals from Dennis Schmidt and Sidney Sam secured first place in Group 1 as Frank Engel's side reached the finals in style.

Germany have become the third nation to qualify for the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Championship as first-half goals from Dennis Schmidt and Sidney Sam secured victory against Bulgaria and first place in Group 1.

Decisive win
After a goalless draw with Hungary and a 1-0 defeat of mini-tournament hosts Republic of Ireland, Frank Engel's side knew three more points at Belfield Park in Dublin would guarantee qualification for July's finals in Austria. Two goals in seven minutes midway through the opening period proved enough for the decisive win, Bayer 04 Leverkusen forward Schmidt opening the scoring in the 21st minute before Hamburger SV striker Sam wrapped up the victory with a second six minutes later.

Engel delight
"Our work-rate was once again crucial, as we showed when we withstood tremendous pressure against a strong Ireland team to win with nine men," said Engel. "We defended magnificently throughout this tournament and didn't concede a goal. Martin Mannel was again excellent in goal, he had a really good game and thwarted everything they could throw at him."
