Andronic heroics
That was the margin between Moldova and Azerbaijan after their final day 0-0 draw in Chisinau, both teams having lost to Ukraine but defeated Scotland. Moldova's winner against Scotland and consolation against Ukraine both came from Oleg Andronic in the final minutes, and were enough to seal their place in the Elite round.
Scotland pipped
Andronic was Moldova's match-winner against 2006 runners-up Scotland, as having been a 77th-minute substitute, he struck the only goal of the game with three minutes left. Artem Kravets and Maksym Kovalov gave Ukraine a two-goal lead at half-time against Azerbaijan, who had Karimov Bayram sent off on 52 minutes before Serhiy Polifylo clinched a 3-0 win.
Final-day drama
Azerbaijan bounced back two days later as Bakhtiyar Soltanov scored on 48 and 67 minutes to beat Scotland 2-0. That allowed Ukraine to clinch progress in first place with a win against Moldova, and Kovalov and Roman Zozulya struck early in the second half to send them on their way. The hosts pulled one back with eight minutes left through Andronic, however, putting them ahead of Azerbaijan on goal difference – which proved crucial after their scoreless decider. Ukraine made it nine points from their three games thanks to Yvegen Shakhov's 87th-minute winner against Scotland.
