The Netherlands missed out on a place at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals by the narrowest of margins despite winning their final Elite round Group 2 contest against Russia in Lendava.
Late penalty
All the sides in the section began the final round of matches on two points from as many games but Slovenia's 2-0 success against Belarus gave the hosts top spot with Netherlands adrift on goal difference alone. The Netherlands took the lead after 31 minutes through Patrick Van Aanolt but his strike was cancelled out shortly after the restart by Vyacheslav Dmitriev. The winner came from the penalty spot in stoppage time, Marko Vejinovic on target as the Dutch fell just short.
