Spain coach Luis Milla acknowledged his side had come through a tough test as the four-time UEFA European Under-19 Championship winners opened the latest finals by coming from a goal down to defeat Turkey, whose coach Ogün Temizkanoğlu cursed his team's luck but still found cause for optimism. France coach Jean Gallice believes more improvement is required if the squad are to emulate his 2005 party and go on to lift the trophy while Serbia's Aleksandar Stanojević was delighted with a 1-1 draw in view of his side's physical condition. uefa.com rounds up the coaches' reaction.

SPAIN 2-1 TURKEY
Luis Milla, Spain coach
We certainly saw a half for each team tonight. In the first 45 minutes they dominated while in the second we played well from the moment we won the penalty. We struggled a lot; they are a great team, they gave everything and I'd like to congratulate them. We knew this would be a difficult match and we knew the dangers they possessed. We had the problems with [Ignacio] Camacho and Fran Mérida being absent but the squad of players we are working with and the good spirit within the camp allowed us to produce a good second half. We created a lot of chances up front and if I had to pick out one player I'd go for José Luis [San Martín] as he was very important for us; he was involved in the awarding of the penalty and scored our second goal.

Ogün Temizkanoğlu, Turkey coach
They are very tough opponents, especially when they have the ball. It seemed that they had more possession than us tonight but we created very good opportunities. It's fair to say that we were a little unlucky; we had some players who were not at their fittest out there but we had to stick with them. I was very satisfied with the first-half performance from my team; if you manage to create three or four good chances against a side like Spain you can't help but feel satisfied.

FRANCE 1-1 SERBIA
Jean Gallice, France coach
As always seems to be the case we started the game very slowly; we were far too shy in the opening period. We took advantage later with a good goal but unfortunately just before half-time they equalised because of a lack of concentration on our part. During the second half we were physically stronger but we couldn't score. We are left with the feeling that we've dropped two points. We know that to have three points from your first game is a great thing in terms of group position so we are disappointed. Having said that this is just the beginning and we will increase our level so we have a lot of hope.

Aleksandar Stanojević, Serbia coach
We are very satisfied with the result as during the second half we physically weren't in good condition and we didn't have a lot of strength to continue where we left off in the opening 45 minutes. In the first half we created many chances and had opportunities to score first while in the second they were the better side so the result was fair. I was generally satisfied with our defensive display and the three forwards we had out there played very well tactically. We are here without eight crucial players and if we had them with us we'd have a chance of winning this tournament.
