Serbia coach Aleksandar Stanojević was understandably content after witnessing his side defeat Spain 2-1 and take the initiative in UEFA European Under-19 Championship Group B. Admitting that – due to several absentees from his squad – he has been forced to change tactics for the tournament, Stanojević was nonetheless delighted with the effort his players put in. France's Jean Gallice said his charges deserved their point after a 1-1 draw with Turkey that left both teams in contention for a semi-final spot while opposite number Ogün Temizkanoğlu – whose team can also still qualify despite being bottom of the group with one point – recognises his players must make better use of the possession.
SERBIA 2-1 SPAIN
Aleksandar Stanojević, Serbia coach
When you win against Spain you have to feel satisfied. Our guys performed above themselves and gave a great display. It's a great success for us. We are here without many important players and because of that we must play the way we did today. We knew it would be tough to try to get at Spain through the middle so we set up to play on the counterattack. I didn't have to say many words to the players because in the heart of every Serbian exists immense bravery and the players proved that. I'd like to thank all of the supporters who came to the stadium tonight and who created a fantastic atmosphere.
Luis Milla, Spain coach
I'm happy with my players. We knew how Serbia would play and that they have dangerous players but we played in our style with possession and control. I want to congratulate Serbia, they played well. We're not looking for excuses, of course the pitch was wet but that had nothing to do with it. I think we deserved a better result but that's the way things go in football. There are small details in games that means things go your way or they don't.
FRANCE 1-1 TURKEY
Ogün Temizkanoğlu, Turkey coach
Whatever the case about how the game went you should never concede in the 90th minute. We were missing some players due to injury today and that affected our game. The heat during the match and the high tempo my players were playing at meant that they started to tire during the latter stages. Our players lost the ball too easily and we squandered too many good chances. As is often the case in football, if you don't capitalise on your opportunities the opposition will eventually punish you.
Jean Gallice, France coach
The biggest impression I'm left with is the conviction the players showed, especially in what were demanding conditions. The teams cancelled each other out in the first half and there were few chances. We created more opportunities after the break and we deserved our equaliser. I told my team not to give up; I was behind them throughout the game. We were hoping to win here today so it's a bit disappointing in that sense but we have to beat Spain now; our destiny is in our own hands.
