With Spain having already confirmed their passage through to the UEFA European Under-19 Championship semi-finals as winners of Group B, the question of who will join them as runners up has yet to be decided.
Going into the last round of games Serbia, Belgium and Turkey all retain hopes of joining Ginés Meléndez's side in the last four with the former who are in the driving seat thanks to a two-point advantage over their rivals. Ahead of their encounter with Belgium in Buftea, Serbia coach Dejan Govedarica – who is without suspended midfielder Miloš Jojić – insisted his team will be going in search of three points despite the fact that one would suffice.
"We will be looking for a win and we'll also try to give a good performance," the former FK Vojvodina player said. "We tried our best [during the 4-0 defeat by] Spain in the last match but they are the favourites to lift the trophy. Now a victory will mean our team progresses so we'll see what happens."
A late Jonas Vervaeke goal in Belgium's last outing against Turkey kept the Red Devils' interest in the tournament alive and also served to boost team morale after an opening day defeat to Spain. "Spirits are high and the players are confident now," said coach Marc Van Geersom, who must look to engineer a win at the Football Centre FRF without suspended forward Igor Vetokele. "Against Turkey we didn't have to adapt our game at all and stuck to our own style, which is what we'll be looking to do again on Tuesday."
According to coach Kemal Özdeş, the fact that only a win will give Turkey any hope of advancing will provide sufficient incentive for his team in their final group encounter with Spain. "We still have a chance to qualify from the group and this will be enough to keep my players motivated," he said. "What was better [in the 1-1 draw with Belgium] than the Serbia game was our ambition to win. We want to triumph in this match by playing football in our own style."
With a 100% record in the tournament thus far Ginés Meléndez has the luxury of being able to rest several players for their encounter with Turkey at the Concordia Stadium in Chiajna, although the Spain coach is pledging no let-up. "We will give some of the guys a break but we're still going to go out to win; we don't know how to do anything else," the three-time tournament winner said.
Spain have previously disposed of Belgium and Serbia, scoring eight goals in the process, and they will be keen to keep their impressive run going as they look to lift the trophy for a fifth time. "We know we're finishing as group winners but the players coming in will still want to give a good showing."
