With 49 caps for the Wales national team, as well as 17 with the U21 side, Danny Gabbidon knows better than most what it means to represent your country on the international stage.
Over the next two weeks, the best and brightest talents in Europe will have the chance to test themselves on one of the game’s most important proving grounds, picking up some crucial lessons and experiences along the way.
What are you most looking forward to about the 2026 U19 EURO?
I’m looking forward to seeing the next generation of talent from all across Europe go head-to-head and I’m really hoping that Wales can leave their mark on the tournament.
How does it make you feel for your country to host this competition?
It fills me with pride to see Cymru hosting a tournament as prestigious as this one. To be given this opportunity also shows the growth of Wales as a football nation over the last ten or so years.
What does it mean for Wales and Welsh football?
It’s an important moment and an opportunity for Wales to showcase everything that’s good about our footballing culture. Anytime you get to host a major tournament is a special moment.
How important is it for young players to have opportunities like this?
Tournaments like this are hugely important for the next generation coming through. Tournament football brings different challenges and new experiences which can play a huge part in the future development of these players.
What lessons can these players learn from the U19 EURO?
So many lessons can be learnt. Playing against top-level opposition. Understanding different tactics and playing styles. Playing in front of big crowds and handling the pressures that come with representing your country on the biggest of stages.

Can you describe the feeling of first pulling on that Wales shirt at youth level?
It was and still is a proud moment. There is no greater honour than representing your country.
It’s every young footballer's dream. To know that you are one of a select group of players, seen as the best in your country, is an amazing feeling and my experiences at youth level played a huge part in progressing me to senior level.
What are some of your fondest memories representing Wales at youth level?
What I enjoyed most was getting the chance to test myself against the best players. After every experience, good or bad, I always felt I went back to my club a better player and more confident in my ability.
Any tips for this year’s U19 EURO players?
The best bit of advice I could give would be to enjoy the experience and to represent yourself and your country in the best way possible.
Some players can go through their whole career and never get to play in a major tournament so understand the importance of it but enjoy all the things that come with it.
