Poland overwhelmed by awesome Adu

Poland were brought back down to earth at the FIFA U-20 World Cup as Freddy Adu scored three in the United States' 6-1 win while the Czech Republic drew again.

Four days after defeating five-time winners Brazil, Poland were brought back down to earth with a bump at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada as the United States produced a devastating display of attacking football to run out 6-1 winners while the Czech Republic were denied victory by an 89th-minute equaliser.

Adu hat-trick
Michal Globisz's side had opened Group D with a 1-0 win against Brazil on Saturday and started in similar vein against the United States in Montreal as Legia Warszawa striker Dawid Janczyk struck in the fifth minute. The lead proved short-lived, however, midfielder Danny Szetela levelling four minutes later before two goals from Freddy Adu gave the US a two-goal cushion at half-time. Szetela effectively made the game safe with his second and his side's fourth six minutes into the second period and, with Poland forced to throw more men forward, Josmer Altidore made it 5-1 in the 70th minute before Adu rounded off an emphatic victory by completing his hat-trick with five minutes left.

'Couldn't give more'
"We hadn't recovered from our physical exertions against Brazil and my players let their heads drop after the second goal; they just couldn't give any more," said Globisz. "The USA have a team of very good players who were better than us physically, technically and tactically, and Freddy Adu and Danny Szetela were very impressive." Poland have slipped to third in the section and end their group campaign against Korea Republic, who lost their second game 3-2 to Brazil with Alexandre Pato scoring twice.

Czechs caught short
The Czech Republic are second in Group D despite drawing both their first two matches and falling behind to Kum Il Kim's 12th-minute strike for Korea DPR at the Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa. Two goals in eleven minutes early in the second half, from Lubos Kalouda and Martin Fenin, looked to have earned three points for Miroslav Soukoup's side only for Kwang Ik Jon to turn in a rebound a minute from time after goalkeeper Radek Petr have saved his penalty.

'In our hands'
Soukoup's side therefore know that three points in their final fixture - against a Panama side who lost 6-0 to holders Argentina on Tuesday, with Club Atlético de Madrid striker Sergio Aguero scoring twice - will confirm a place in the last 16. "We've got another game and if we win we can go through to the next round so it's still in our hands," said the Czech coach. "Fortunately our half-time team talk had an effect and we were able to fight back and then take the lead, but the draw was a fair result because we'd lost our shape by the end."
