Two-time European champions Umeå IK and Montpellier Hérault SC will reconvene for the second leg of their UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final next Wednesday with the tie finely poised following a goalless draw in Sweden.

Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested in a game of few clear chances at the Gammliavallen as both defences held sway. It was not until the 31st minute that the first discernible effort arrived, with Anna Paulson shooting straight at Céline Deville, who was then pressed into service moments later when she turned Sofia Jakobsson's strike away. As the half ended, Pernilla Nordlund had another sight of goal for the hosts with a shot which went over, while after the break it was Deville's opposite number, Caroline Jönsson, who was first into action, saving easily from Marie-Laure Delie.

Umeå substitute Emma Åberg Zingmark fired wide midway through the half after a neat interchange between Emmelie Konradsson and Jakobsson down the right as the hosts tried to up the tempo. With two minutes remaining, Jakobsson pulled her effort off target following a long ball out of defence, a miss which almost proved costly as Montpellier immediately fashioned two chances of their own. First, Delie's effort was blocked, while from the rebound Ludivine Diguelman fired wide from five metres.

Despite failing to break down the visitors' defence, new Umeå coach Joakim Blomqvist is full of confidence ahead of the return in France following his first competitive match in charge. "I'm not worried that we didn't score; our strength is in defence," he said. "Many of the players have little experience and have not played in the competition before but playing away from home could benefit our young players." Sarah M'barek, the Montpellier coach, added: "I'm looking forward to the home leg, when we expect around 10,000 fans to come and support us."
