Frankfurt relief
Frankfurt's opening defeat by Zvezda had left their title defence in peril but they recovered to beat Group B1 hosts Røa IL 3-1 in Norway on Saturday and they repeated that scoreline against Glasgow City LFC. It took Frankfurt 28 minutes to break down Glasgow before Sarah Schatton opened the scoring and Karolin Thomas made it 2-0 to Günter Wegmann's side at the break. Rachel Corsie pulled one back for the Scottish champions early in the second half and only when Thomas struck again in added time could Frankfurt relax.
Zvezda top
Zvezda claimed first place with a 3-1 win against Røa – meaning Frankfurt will meet German rivals FCR 2001 Duisburg in the quarter-finals in the first two weeks of November. That is because Duisburg defeated Brøndby IF 4-1 to top Group B4 in Ukraine, leaving the Danish side up against Zvezda of Russia. Inka Grings shot Duisburg into an early lead against Brøndby and although Tanja Mejer Christensen swiftly equalised, a Malene Olsen own goal made it 2-1. After the break Sonya Fuss increased the lead further before another own goal by Line Hansen settled matters. UD Levante beat hosts WFC Naftochimik 4-1 for third place.
Umeå top
Two-time winners Umeå IK, denied in last year's final by Frankfurt, topped Group B2 on home soil with a 4-0 defeat of ASD CF Bardolino Verona. Umeå were already ahead of their fellow qualifiers on goal difference but went ahead on 55 minutes through Ramona Bachmann and Marta added another just after an hour before goalkeeper Ulla-Karin Rönnlund converted a penalty. Marta struck again in the last minute. Valur Reykjavík secured third place by defeating Kazakhstan's Alma KTZH 8-0 with a first-half hat-trick by Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir. The Iceland striker has now equalled the competition record tally of 14 goals, set by Conny Pohlers, then of 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, in 2004/05.
Lyon defeat Arsenal
Umeå will now have a chance to avenge their 2006/07 final defeat by Arsenal LFC, beaten to first place in Group B3 by Olympique Lyonnais after a 3-0 win for the home side at Stade de Gerland. Lotta Schelin scored on 26 minutes and added another with eleven minutes left not long after a Camille Abily goal. Lyon take on the other beaten 2007/08 semi-finalists Bardolino, with the Italian side, like all the runners-up, at home on 5/6 November and away the following week. SV Neulengbach ended third with a 5-3 win against FC Zürich Frauen. In the semi-finals in the spring, Frankfurt or Duisburg will play Lyon or Bardolino and Umeå or Arsenal face Zvezda or Brøndby.
