Kessler creates Wolfsburg concern

Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler sustained a knee injury in the Algarve Cup final which is likely to rule her out of VfL Wolfsburg's quarter-final first leg against FC Rossiyanka next week.

Not only did Germany lose the Algarve Cup final 2-0 to the United States, but midfielder Nadine Kessler sustained a knee injury which could rule her out of VfL Wolfsburg's upcoming UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final.

Kessler suffered a laceration to her left knee on Wednesday, which required four stitches, and is expected to be sidelined for around two weeks, meaning she will miss the first leg against FC Rossiyanka on 20 March. However, the 24-year-old might be back for the return encounter in Russia eight days later.

"Her studs directly connected with my knee, which created a five centimetre long laceration, but I am fine now and everything has been disinfected," Kessler said. "Everything is OK, it was a bit unlucky, but I am optimistic about being fit soon."

Wolfsburg coach Ralf Kellermann added: "You have injuries in football, but Kessi is terribly important for us. We as a team have to compensate for it now."
