Holders warm to Helsinki task

HJK Helsinki 0-2 1. FFC Frankfurt Frankfurt's defence of the UEFA Women's Cup received a boost with an away win.

Inaugural UEFA Women's Cup winners 1. FFC Frankfurt are still on course to defend the trophy they won last season after winning 2-0 at HJK Helsinki in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

Snowy conditions
Despite snowy conditions and -3ºC temperatures in the Finnish capital, the German visitors dominated their hosts, who deployed five players in defence in an attempt to reach a second successive semi-final.

Jones on target
Katrin Kliehm put Frankfurt ahead just after the half-hour, and the victory was confirmed on 64 minutes when Stephanie Jones headed a second – both goals coming from Birgit Prinz corners.

Staab praised winners
Frankfurt coach Monika Staab praised her team after the match, saying: "My team wanted the victory and once they were focussed there was no doubt about the result."

Second leg
Helsinki travel to Germany for the second leg on 1 December, by which time the identity of the semi-final opposition will be known. Sweden's Umeå IK, beaten by Frankfurt in the 2001/02 final, will be looking for revenge, but first have to defeat Toulouse FC of France.
