Article body
Denmark were beaten 2-1 by Japan in their final Group A fixture in the 2002 Under-19 FIFA Women's World Championship - but still reached the quarter-finals at France's expense.
Four points enough
The result left Denmark third in the group behind Canada and Japan, but their goal difference of minus one is superior to the record of France - who were in the same position in Group A, and also gained three points.
Ohno double
It had started perfectly for Denmark in Edmonton's Commonwealth stadium, Sandra Jensen scoring in the fifth minute from a header. Denmark held that lead until the 65th minute, when Japan's Shinobu Ohno chipped over goalkeeper Susanne Graversen, and seven minutes later the same player tapped home after a scramble in the area.
American fixture
However, Canada's 2-0 victory against Nigeria ensured Denmark finished third in the group, giving them a tough quarter-final on Sunday against the in-form United States in Victoria. Canada meet England and Japan play Germany the same day, while bottom-placed Nigeria join France, Mexico and Chinese Taipei in an early exit.
