Grishin relieved as Russia find form

Group B reaction: There was relief for Russia coach Valentin Grishin as the holders defeated Switzerland to stay in contention.

There was relief for Russia coach Valentin Grishin tonight as the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship holders came from behind to defeat hosts Switzerland 2-1, with both their second-half goals made by winger Elena Morozova for the prolific Elena Danilova. Russia are second in Group B ahead of Switzerland on the basis of their head-to-head record but France are three points clear after beating the Netherlands 1-0, though Dutch coach Ed Engelkes believes his team showed a significant improvement from their opening loss to the Swiss.

SWITZERLAND 1-2 RUSSIA
Claudio Taddei, Switzerland coach
It was going well... I am very disappointed. We didn't play like we can play, I don't know why, maybe we were tired. We have to analyse what went wrong. Danilova is a great player - they scored, but we also had four or five very good chances. Obviously, Morozona was very tough, she made the passes for those two goals. She got a hamstring injury this morning in training.

Valentin Grishin, Russia coach
It was predictable that we would win from watching the game. I am satisfied with the team but not the result itself. If we had taken our chances the score would have been more. Morozova, [Elena] Terekhova and Danilova have always played together; it didn't work against France as Morozova played poorly, but this time it worked. In the previous game I did not recognise my team, the defence and midfield were poor. And at half-time today I was not only angry, the whole team was angry too.

Elena Danilova, Russia goalscorer
We gave everything today and we are happy now that we have won. Elena Morozona and myself always play this way. It doesn't always work but today we were lucky.

NETHERLANDS 0-1 FRANCE
Ed Engelkes, Netherlands coach
Maybe you expect me to be disappointed. I am disappointed but I'm proud of the team because they played much, much better in the second half. We made it very difficult for France; we gave them a tough game. In the first half we waited too much for the ball so the goal was coming. They had three great opportunities and then they scored. So we made some changes at half-time and I think we played quite well in the second half. We were much more out in front and we won more of our own duels against our opponents. I'm proud because we lost to a very good team and they have a great chance to be European champions.

Stéphane Pilard, France coach
I am content that we won the match. We have stayed ahead [in the group] but now I am a little bit disappointed in the manner of our victory. We didn't play as well as we did in our first match. I'm disappointed that we did not score more as if we had scored a second I think we could have won much more easily.
