Article body
Germany's defence of their FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup title got off to the worst of starts as they slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat against Korea DPR. It leaves them bottom of Group C alongside Switzerland, who also lost today, although life looks far rosier for France.
Germany crash
Having added the European crown to their world one less than a month ago, Germany went into this tournament on the crest of a wave but Korea DPR quickly set about dismantling them in Moscow. Pok Hui Jong broke the deadlock ten minutes before half-time and although the Germans pressed for an equaliser, Yun Mi Jo added a second with 20 minutes remaining to leave Maren Meinert with a lot to consider before Monday's meeting with Mexico.
Swiss rolled
The Mexicans will provide formidable opposition having beaten Switzerland 4-2 in the earlier game at the Dynamo Stadium. Maria de Lourdes, Charlyn Corral (2) and Monica Ocampo were all on target as Vanessa Bürki's two-goal salvo proved in vain for the Swiss, who will need a massive upturn in form to reignite their Group C campaign when the face Korea DPR.
Delie delight
France enjoyed better fortunes elsewhere in the Russian capital as they soared to the top of Group D with an emphatic 5-0 victory against Argentina at the Torpedo Stadium. Marie-Laure Delie scored twice and Louisa Necib and Jessica Houara were all on target after Laure Boulleau had given the French an early lead. Victory on Monday against Congo DR, who were edged to a 2-1 defeat by the United States in the section's other game, will seal their progress.
