Korea DPR take the prize

Korea DPR defeated China 5-0 to win the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Russia and become only Asia's second global football champions at any level.

Korea DPR became the first team from the Far East to take a global football title after they defeated China 5-0 to win the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Russia.

Comfortable win
In torrential conditions at Moscow's Lokomotiv stadium, Korea DPR were dominant from the start and went ahead on 29 minutes through Jo Yun-Mi. Kim Song-Hui added a second ten minutes later and Kim Song-Hui effectively ended Chinese hopes in first-half added time. Kim Song-Hui and Kil Son-Hui then struck early in the second period. The only previous Asian champions of such an event were Saudi Arabia in the men 's 1989 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Chinese consolation
China, who had knocked out the hosts in the quarter-finals, progressed past the last four with a penalty shoot-out victory against 2002 champions the United States, who had earlier defeated holders Germany. It was China's second straight loss in the final, having gone down to Germany two years ago, but captain Ma Xiaoxu did win the Golden Shoe as player of the tournament and Golden Ball as top scorer with five goals, pipping Kim Song-Hui due to a greater number of assists. Germany's Anna Blässe, who scored four goals including a hat-trick in the tournament record 9-1 victory against Mexico, took the Bronze Ball.

Brazil take third
Russia shared the Fair Play award with Korea DPR, who ousted France in the quarter-finals and then beat Brazil 1-0. However, Brazil did win 5-4 on penalties against the US to take third place after a goalless draw. Five Europeans were named in the FIFA All-Star Team; Germany defender Babett Peter and captain Célia Okoyino da Mbabi, France duo Coralie Ducher and Amandine Henry plus Russia striker Elena Danilova. Competition debutants Switzerland and Finland both departed in the group stage.
