Katharina Baunach hailed the experience of Germany's veterans of 12 months ago after Maren Meinert's team made a victorious start to their title defence against Denmark, though she insists they will not rest on their laurels before Friday's meeting with Norway.
Attacking approach
The FC Bayern München youngster was a lively presence throughout Germany's 1-0 win over Denmark at the Víkingsvöllur Stadium. A formidable presence in defence, the 18-year-old needed little invitation to join the attack, linking up with club-mate Nicole Banecki on the flank and running at opponents in a manner more befitting her hero Ronaldinho than a left-back. With the Danes on the back foot, Monique Kerschowki scored the only goal on 20 minutes. "We were very happy with our goal but after that we had to concentrate on not conceding, especially in the second half when we lost some tempo," said Baunach.
'Determined'
"We could have scored several more but at the same time we were determined not to concede. We played compact football and are delighted to have made a winning start. That's done though so now we need to begin focusing on our next match on Friday." Such professionalism speaks volumes for the determination coursing through the Germany squad. They will not underestimate Norway, having come within a minute of defeat by Jarl Torske's team in a June friendly when Nadine Kessler's late strike earned a 1-1 draw.
Crucial experience
Germany captain Kessler is one of six players who featured in Switzerland last year where the side claimed a fourth UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship crown; one of the youngest members of this squad, Baunach is grateful for their presence. "Their experience is very important, especially with the younger players," she said. "They guide the team, provide security and play a key role for us." Judging by her performance against Denmark Bauanch, who scored three times in qualifying, could also play a big part.
