US too good for England

United States 3-0 England England's FIFA Women's World Cup campaign is over at the quarter-final stage after conceding three second-half goals.

England's FIFA Women's World Cup campaign is over at the quarter-final stage after conceding three second-half goals to two-time winners the United States.

Wambach chance
England were the equal of the US for the majority of the first half with the defence and goalkeeper Rachel Brown putting their bodies on the line on a number of occasions to snuff out any chances. The two best opportunities came in the latter stages of the half with Abby Wambach, playing her 100th game for the United States, going close from six metres and Kristine Lilly having a drive well tipped over by Brown.

Goal rush
Three minutes after the restart the US went in front with Wambach rising highest at the far post to head in Lilly's corner and score for the fourth time in the tournament. After 57 minutes, Shannon Boxx drilled home an excellent effort from 20 metres. Lilly completed a purple patch for the United States on the hour mark when a long ball bounced over Brown, leaving the experienced captain with a tap-in. England, on their second World Cup campaign, have equalled their debut run of 1995 while the US now face either Brazil or Australia in Tianjin on Thursday.
