Neto installed as Portugal coach

Portugal have handed Francisco Neto the task of reviving the side's 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup bid following the departure of António Violante on Friday.

The 32-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal running until 30 June 2015 and will take to the dugout for the first time in March's Algarve Cup. "It is with great pride and passion that I have undertaken this role," said Neto, who worked as the national team's goalkeeping coach under Mónica Jorge from 2008 to 2010 and more recently has been in charge of Goa-India.

"We will continue António Violante's work, whose main goal was to close the gap on the elite teams in women's football. I know women's football very well and hope to contribute to its development. It's an ambitious protect with a well-defined structure in place."

Meanwhile, Neto has named four uncapped players in his first Portugal squad for the Algarve Cup: defender Inês Silva, midfielders Stephanie Santos and Tatiana Pinto, and forward Diana Silva. Currently fourth in Women's World Cup qualifying Group 5, Neto's team resume their campaign at home to Greece on 9 April.
